Strengthening Scientific Exchange: Secondment by Linkcare to EBRI of Dr. Michelle Barnett (UoN)

As part of the VαMPiRE project´s commitment to scientific excellence and cross-border collaboration, we are pleased to highlight the secondment by Linkcare of Dr. Michelle Barnett (Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Newcastle – Australia), to the EBRI – Rita Levi Montalcini Foundation in Rome, Italy.

Dr. Barnett has joined the Laboratory of Post-translational Protein Modifications and Neurotransmitter Release Mechanisms, led by Dr. Marco Feligioni, where she is contributing her advance expertise in extracellular vesicle (EV) isolation using Immunoaffinity capture techniques.

This method, which allows for the selective capture of EV subpopulations with high specificity, aligns perfectly with VαMPiRE scientific goals. The project places a strong emphasis on decoding intercellular communication mechanisms in neurological disorders, with EVs playing a central role in this exploration. Dr. Barnett’s know-how in this domain brings valuable methodological insights to the consortium and fosters consistency across our experimental workflows.

This secondment exemplifies the spirit of the VαMPiRE project: promoting mobility among researchers, encouraging exchange between institutions for bridging scientific cultures, and fostering dynamic, interdisciplinary partnerships. It is through initiatives like this that we ensure knowledge transfer, stimulate innovation, and create a cohesive research community committed to unlocking the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of EVs in the nervous system.

We look forward to building on this collaboration and exploring future opportunities for joint research within the VαMPiRE consortium.
